Mission Statement

BYU Mathematics Committee Structure

The math department, according to its vision and the expectations of its faculty members, has teaching, research, and citizenship (service) as its major responsibilities. In practice, the department has many tasks to perform that deal with two or three of these areas at the same time. This is reflected in the committee structure outlined below, in which tasks are identified and given appropriate priority, committee duties are outlined, and the structure of each committee is described.

Top Priorities

Teaching effectiveness is the first responsibility of all BYU faculty members, whether they are meeting the students in the classroom, designing an appropriate curriculum, supporting the sharpening of teaching skills for themselves or others, or enlivening the teaching process through research. The main tasks associated with the teaching mission include

  • being effective in the classroom
  • designing effective and relevant courses for all students
  • constructing an effective and solid curriculum for majors
  • effectively advising and mentoring students
  • being productive in ongoing research efforts
  • mentoring junior faculty in teaching and in research
  • hiring effective faculty
  • encouraging faculty and students to achieve excellence
  • recognizing achievement of excellence in teaching, learning, and research
  • effective allocation of resources

These major tasks thus involve all the areas of departmental responsibility. Though BYU is an undergraduate teaching university, its teaching mission cannot be accomplished without significant effort in all of these tasks. Committees and coordinators are appointed to carry out various parts of these tasks.
