BYU Mathematics Expectations of Faculty

Expectations of Faculty

As guided by University policy and its own shared vision, the Department's expectations of faculty members include good teaching, productive research, and supportive citizenship.

Teaching: The Department expects each faculty member to be a competent and effective teacher. In particular, each faculty member should teach a normal class load (usually 4 or 5 courses per year, adjustable according to individual circumstances and department needs) and put student learning at the center of his or her work, as evidenced by such things as holding regular office hours, assessing student performance frequently, providing students feedback in a timely manner, keeping performance expectations in line with departmental norms, and responding satisfactorily to peer reviews and student evaluations of teaching. Efforts to improve teaching effectiveness and maximize teaching resources should be part of each faculty member's teaching commitment.

Research: The Department expects each faculty member in the professorial ranks to be a productive researcher. In particular, each faculty member should work toward producing a body of mathematical research known and valued by the leaders in the field, as evidenced by appropriate attendance at meetings and conferences, regular publications, scholarly presentations, and applications for and receipt of external research funding. Research and creative work in the form of expository writing, production of text materials, or course development may be considered as service to the department or profession but normally does not take the place of basic research.

Citizenship: The Department requires assistance from each faculty member in carrying out committee work and other departmental, college, and university responsibilities. Citizenship service includes membership on a committee, coordinating a departmental responsibility, giving peer reviews of teaching, serving in College or University assignments, and giving service to the mathematics profession, as appropriate relative to rank and experience. Each faculty member is also expected to further the mathematical culture of the Department and to contribute to a supportive and collegial atmosphere.
