Can you take BYU classes or challenge exams when you are not a current BYU Student?
No, only currently enrolled students may take BYU classes offered on campus. BYU independent study offers some classes that may fill some requirements the student may have.
Can I test out of Math 102? If so, how?
Yes, but only by getting an ACT score of 22 or higher, there is no Challenge Exam for Math 102.
If I need to fill the Quantitative Reasoning G.E. and the Advanced Language G.E. does that take two classes or can one cover both?
It depends, yes-any math class higher than Math 102 will qualify for that most basic requirement, but the higher math class must be Math 112, 113, or Math 119 or higher to also qualify for the Advanced Language G.E. So no-if the class were Math 110 or 111 it would cover the Quantitative Reasoning G.E. but not the Advanced Language G.E..
How do I know what Math class to start out with?
That depends on what the highest math class you last took was, how long it has been since you took it, what level of math your major requires, and where you feel most comfortable in math. Please call the office so that we can help you determine this in detail. Our general suggestion would be to see what classes you need for your major, then see if any of them are fulfilled on your progress report by classes or tests that you took in High School. Then see about taking the Math class that is the next step up that your major requires you to take. (There is a Math Refresher Course offered through Engineering Tech, 295R, more information is on their website)
How do I take the Math 110/112/119 Pretest/Placement Tests?
How many times can I take them?
Each one can only be taken twice (per semester), if you think you have a special circumstance please call our office at 422-2061. (Remember to save often)
Do I have to enroll in the class if I take the pretest?
No
How long do I have to take the tests?
There are no limits on the time you can take, just remember to save often and allow enough time to finish (a few hours on average, but everyone is different, if you struggle with math then allow yourself more time)
Does it give me a grade, when will it show up?
Your score should come up right after you submit your answers.
If I don’t pass the test will I not be able to sign up for the class?
You can still sign up for the class, but it is recommended that you take the class only if you do well enough on the Pretest. You may still be able to do well in the class if you fail the pretest; the idea is that hopefully you will not waste time in a class that you are not prepared for.
How do I set up an appointment with an advisor?
Call the Math Office or look up their office hours and meet them then, don’t be afraid to set up an appointment, the teachers are very happy to meet with you!
Where is the Advisement Center for Math?
The Advisement Center for the College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, of which Mathematics is a part, is located in 179 of the Eyring Science Center, just inside the north doors of the building.
Can I take certain classes, which are prerequisites to a class, concurrently?
Yes, Math 343 and Math 214 is the most common example of this. Math 343 is a prerequisite for Math 214, but it can also be taken concurrently (at the same time). If you have questions about particular classes then please talk to the teacher of the given class on a case by case basis.
Are there any positions open for grading?
Talk with your previous professors or look on the boards in the stairwells to see if we have any positions open. You can check at the office, but we’ll usually tell you to check on the boards or with your professors.
Can I get into the Master’s program in math without having a Bachelor’s in Math?
Yes and no, you don’t have to have the actual degree but you need to have all the classes that would make it equivalent to the degree. In other words, you have to have all of the undergraduate courses needed for a Bachelor’s in Mathematics behind you before you can try for the Master’s program.
How do I apply to the Master’s Program?
- Go to <math.byu.edu>
- click on Prospective and Current Students
- click on Graduate (as in Graduate Student)
- click on Applications and Deadlines and follow the directions there
Where can I find information about the colloquium?
- Go to <math.byu.edu>
- click on Information
- click on Seminars and Colloquiua and scroll down the page to find the colloquium that you are looking for
Where can I turn in my homework?
Come to 295 TMCB and find your teacher’s box on the right hand side when you walk in, Faculty on top, part time in the middle, and graduate students on the bottom. Evening classes are on the counter to the side. All boxes should be labeled.
Where can I find contact information for my teacher or T.A.?
Most information should be available online from math.byu.edu, you may also come to 292 TMCB and look at the contact information posted outside on the bulletin board.
Who do I talk to make a complaint about my teacher?
Either come to 292 TMCB to make an appointment or email the secretaries at office@math.byu.edu and we will set an appointment up for you.
How do I take the challenge exam for Math 97, 110, 112, 113, etc.?
If you haven’t taken the class you want to test out of or any higher level math class or are signed up in the class and will be taking the challenge exam before the add/drop deadline then come to 292 to get a form to fill out. You will need to have at least 48 hours to do this because we need to get it signed by a certain professor. The time allotment will ensure that we can get things signed in that time. Then you will take the form and $20 over to the testing center to take the exam. If you like the grade that you get, then take the form over to the Records office, if not, don’t turn it in. If you decide not to turn it in then you will not be able to take the exam again but must take the class in order to get credit. (Math 97 is a $10 fee)
What do I do if I really need to take this class but there are no spots online? Can I come in to get a Add/Drop card signed?
Keep going to class until the Add/Drop deadline, if there are spots in the class but not online then in these special circumstances come to the office and we will see about helping you add the class. Please do not come in if you have not tried the previously suggested options.
What class do I take if I’m not ready for Math 110, but I will need to in order to take a higher Math class for my major?
Math 97 is Intermediate Algebra and is available to the students at the Salt Lake Center and through BYU Independent Study. This was the prerequisite for Math 110 and should prepare the student for this class.
What classes transfer?
Dr. Forcade is our current Transfer Credit Evaluator, and his email is forcader@math.byu.edu . If you need to have a class evaluated please come to 292 TMCB and get the form that tells you what you need to get your particular class evaluated. The College Advisement Center also has a list of classes from a number of Utah based Universities as well as other LDS Institutions that should be equivalent. The site is http://cpms.byu.edu/advisement/transfer/math-stats .
(Either just contact info for a transfer coordinator or a spreadsheet on a link that shows basic and most common transfer equivalencies like college algebra and quant reasoning from schools like UVSC, the U, Utah State. )
