Purpose
The Brigham Young University (BYU)
Summer Mathematics Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU)
is an exciting eight-week program with the following goals:
| |
Provide undergraduate students with the opportunity to experience doing mathematical research |
| |
| |
Encourage undergraduate students, especially female students and students from institutions with limited research opportunities, to attend graduate school in mathematics |
| |
| |
Prepare participants to be successful in graduate school |
| |
| Also, we will provide participants with skills that will help them in their research and in graduate school. To do this, we will offer training sessions
in computers, seminars on needed research skills, and discussions on graduate school. Topics for discussion about graduate school could include the following: |
| |
| |
"Common misconceptions about graduate school in mathematics" |
| |
| |
"What you should do now to prepare for graduate school" |
| |
| |
"Math organizations that graduate students should be aware of" |
| |
| |
"Attending conferences, giving presentations,
and publishing research" |
| |
| Finally, we will provide some social and recreational activities that will foster interaction and collaboration in a relaxing environment. These could include local hikes to waterfalls and springs that can be done in the evening, and one weekend trip such as a whitewater rafting trip or an excursion to Zion’s National. |
