Students should gain a familiarity with a particular area of applied mathematics selected by the instructor. In general, a significant, coherent set of readings will be defined, and the student's base of mathematical knowledge and expertise will increase in notable, measurable ways. The student is expected to demonstrate mastery of the material in a manner that is acceptable to the professor.
