The first annual BYU Department of Mathematics Math Contest will be held on March 25, 2006 from 9-11 AM and from 1-3 PM in Room 111 TMCB. The contest is open to all enrolled BYU undergraduate students, and cash prizes will be awarded. The contest will consist of a two-part exam. Each part will be two hours in length, and consist of five mathematical questions of varying levels of difficulty. The problems will be of a type similar to those found on the nationwide Putnam Exam, an annual undergraduate mathematics contest sponsored by the Mathematical Association of America. In particular, although the problems will be quite difficult, they will not require a deep knowledge of material from advanced courses in mathematics. Most of the problems will be solvable by clever applications of techniques learned in algebra, calculus and/or linear algebra courses. No computational aids, such as calculators, computers, rulers, compasses, etc. will be allowed. Winners will be notified by e-mail, and prizes will be awarded at the Math Department closing social at the end of Winter Semester.
First Prize: $250
Second Prize: $200
Third Prize: $150
Fourth Prize: $100
Fifth Prize: $50
