Course Description

Math 372 is a first undergraduate course in Galois theory. During the semester, we will undertake a detailed study of polynomials with coefficients in fields and their roots. In particular, we will study symmetries of the roots of polynomials known as Galois groups. Using Galois groups, we will prove that, although there are formulae for the roots of quadratic, cubic, and quartic polynomials, there is no similar formula for the roots of a quintic polynomial (or any higher degree).

The course will cover most of the material in the first 11 chapters of the textbook, as well as selected material from later chapters.
