Course Description

This is a first course in number theory. We will cover most of the textbook "Fundamentals of Number Theory" by W. Leveque. Some of the topics that we will cover are basic arithmetic of the integers (including unique factorization), congruence arithmetic, primitive roots, quadratic reciprocity, the distribution of primes, sums of squares, quadratic number fields, and diophantine equations. Math 371 is a prerequisite, and it will be assumed that the student is familiar with the concepts of groups and rings, although no deep theory will be assumed.
