Course Description

Math 571 is a first graduate course in algebra. It is assumed that everyone in the class has had undergraduate algebra at the level of Math 371/372. We will move very quickly through basic group theory, cover more advanced topics in group theory, and then move on to study rings and modules. The intent of the course is to give students a sufficiently rigorous understanding of algebra to pass qualifying exams in most major Ph.D. programs. The course will have both in-class and take home exams, as well as daily homework.
