Course Description

Math 572 is a the second half of a first graduate course in algebra. It is assumed that everyone in the class has had undergraduate algebra at the level of Math 371/372. Building on the material studied in Math 571, we will discuss module theory, vector spaces, modules over a PID, and Galois Theory. It is expected that we will have some time at the end of the semester to discuss at least one additional topic.

The intent of the course is to give students a sufficiently rigorous understanding of algebra to pass qualifying exams in most major Ph.D. programs. In order to help students achieve this goal, we will have an in-class midterm and an in-class final exam.
