Course Description

This semester we will study the book "Primes of the form x2+ny2: Fermat, Class Field Theory, and Complex Multiplication." By concentrating on a specific problem, we will undertake an overview of modern algebraic number theory which will take us from quadratic reciprocity in the 18th century through algebraic number fields and class field theory in the 19th and early 20th centuries to the study of modular forms and elliptic curves in the late 20th century. The course will be reasonably self contained, but a knowledge of algebra (at least through Math 372) will be needed. Math 387 and Math 586 may be helpful, but we will review the necessary facts as they are needed.
