Text: Elementary Differential Equations , Seventh Ed., Boyce and DiPrima

Prerequisite:

Math 113 and Math 343 with a grade of C- or better.

Objectives:

Includes methods and theory of ordinary differential equations.

Important Dates:

You may have noticed in the homework schedule that there is a date scheduled for each exam. THESE WILL NOT CHANGE. Put them in your calendar now so you can prepare. You MUST be present for each of these exams. No makeup exams or early exams are given except under very unusual circumstances.

Other important dates of the semester are as follows:

July 5 Holiday

July 8 Last day to drop

July 23 Holiday

Aug 10 Reading Day

Final Exam:

The final exam date for this class is listed in the class schedule and on your homework sheet. According to College policy, you must take the final exam, and you must take it at the regularly scheduled time. Please don't ask to take it early. If you are getting married or going on a trip, please plan accordingly.

Homework:

Homework is assigned on the accompanying homework schedule. It will be collected each class day. Homework for a section is due the NEXT class day after the lecture is concluded. Late homework will not be graded. There are NO exceptions. You will be allowed to drop your four lowest homework scores at the end of the semester. This is intended to cover for you in the case of forgotten homework, or illness. In the case of a long illness, accomodations may be reached on consultation with the instructor.

Calculators:

Calculators will not be allowed on any exam in this course. The exams will be designed to work without a calculator. The emphasis is on what you can do by hand. Calculators may occasionally be useful when doing the homework. Any scientific calculator will suffice. You DO NOT need a graphing calculator for this course. If you have questions on this topic, come see me.

Grading:

Your work will be graded based on accuracy, and your justification for your solution. Correct answers with no justification will recieve no credit, unless the problem is multiple choice. Partial credit will be given to a non-multiple choice question if progress toward the correct solution is shown. If your paper was graded incorrectly, you have until the NEXT CLASS DAY after the solutions are posted to point the error out to me. Otherwise, I will not look at it.

Class Participation:

Your grade will be based on a straight percentage as will be shown below. However, sometimes a student is close to the breakoff point for the higher grade. For example, if a B- grade is 80 percent, and a student has better than 79 percent in the course, I will bump the student up to the higher grade IF the student has shown class participation during the semester. This will usually involve board work of some sort, but will vary.

Course grade:

Your grade is based on exam and homework scores. Except for the exception noted above (which is available to every student), there is no extra credit. Please do not ask. Incompletes are given only in rare cases and require verifiable, written documentation. Your final grade for this course will be determined as follows:
4 exams400 pts
Homework/Quizzes 100 pts
Final Exam 200 pts
Total 700 pts
Your grade for each exam will be determined by the following scale:
93+ A 73-76 C
90-92 A- 70-72 C-
89-87 B+ 67-69 D+
83-86 B
80-82 B-
77-79 C+

When you need help:

In addition to my office hours, you are encouraged to take advantage of the Math Lab in TMCB 150. Tutors are available. I will also have one posted hour in the Math Lab each week.

Academic Responsibilities:

The first injuction of the BYU Honor Code is the call to "be honest." Students come to the University not only to improve their minds, gain knowledge, and develop skills that will assist them in their life's work, but also to build character. "President David O. McKay taught that character is the highest aim of education" (The Aims of a BYU Education, p.6.) It is the purpose of the BYU Academic Honesty Policy to assist in fulfilling that aim.

BYU students should seek to be totally honest in their dealings with others. They should complete their own work and be evaluated based upon that work. They should avoid academic dishonesty and misconduct in all its forms, including Plagiarism, fabrication or falsification, cheating, and other academic misconduct. (Taken from the Academic Honesty Policy, BYU Handbook)

If a student is found to be cheating in any form, the student will recieve a failing grade for that assignment or exam. In addition, the incident will be forwarded to the Honor Code office. If the action is repeated, the student will recieve an E for the course.

Americans with Disabilities Act:

BYU is committed to providing reasonable accommodation to qualified persons with disabilities. If you have any disability that may adversely affect your success in this course, please contact the Services with Disabilities Office at 422-2767. Services deemed appropriate will be coordinated with the student and instructor by that office.

Preventing Sexual Harassment

BYU's policy against sexual harassment extends not only to employees of the university but to students as well. If you encounter sexual harassment, gender-based discrimination, or other inappropriate behavior, please talk to your professor, contact the Equal Employment Office at 422-5895, or contact the Honor Code Office at 422-2847.
