LaTex

Although you may use any method to type in your homework I strongly encourage you to learn LaTex. Although it may be harder at first, the benefits pay off quickly.

Instructions for Windows users

You first need to download and install a version of Tex. The most widely used is MikTex. Go to the MikTex homepage and download version 2.7. I would recommend installing the basic version, not the complete. The complete is very large and MikTex has ability to install packages as you need them if one is missing.

Next you need an editor. A very good free editor is TexMaker. Another very good editor is WinEdt. You may use WinEdt for a short time for free. After that you will receive (increasingly annoying) reminders to purchase the software. Note: WinEdt is the editor on the lab computers.

Instructions for Mac users

Just download the latest MacTex version. Click on the downloaded file MacTex.dmg and Tex will be installed on your computer.

Now go to TexShop. After downloading the latest version of TexShop simply click on the file TexShop.dmg and it will be installed on your computer.

Using LaTex

You may look at files example1.tex (or example1.pdf) and example2.tex (or example2.pdf) to see some examples of typical commands.

The file template.tex (or template.pdf) contains a template for your homework assignments.

LaTex Resources

The file ltxprimer.pdf contains a primer for LaTex. Another primer is located at http://www.maths.tcd.ie/~dwilkins/LaTeXPrimer/.

The file Texmaker.pdf contains an overview of TexMaker. The file WinEdtOverview.pdf contains an overview of WinEdt.

For a list of common symbols go to http://web.ift.uib.no/Fysisk/Teori/KURS/WRK/TeX/symALL.html. The file symbols-letter.pdf contains a comprehensive list of symbols.
